Jan Terlouw took his doctoral degree in physics on a thermonuclear object of study in which he was involved for thirteen years, in the Netherlands, America and Sweden.

He was a Member of Parliament ( Tweede Kamer ) for ten years, eight of which as Parliamentary chairman and political leader of D66. In addition he was vice-premier and Minister for Economic Affairs in the Van Agt cabinets II and III, secretary-general of an international political organisation in Paris and Royal Commissioner in Gelderland. In 2003 he resigned the senatorial office he had held for four years.These days he still has numerous managerial duties.
